Great Pairings in the Big Apple

THE CHELSEA HIGH LINE, A CUP OF JAVA AND A SLICE OF PIE

If you live in Dallas, you are probably familiar with the Katy Trail -- an old railroad track that has been converted into a beautiful walking trail.  Well, New York has the Chelsea High Line.  The High Line is a public park/walking trail built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan's West Side.  It runs through the neighborhoods of Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen/Clinton.  Once dominated by industrial and transportation industries,  now you will find some of the best restaurants, shops, housing, art galleries and museums located in the city in these neighborhoods.    Plus, the elevated view you get when walking along High Line gives a great perspective of these New York neighborhoods.  Go to www.thehighline.org for more information.

The Kava Cafe is a wonderful espresso cafe serving great coffee, pastries, gelato, beer and wine.  So, no matter what time of day you can start or end your walk on the Chelsea High Line at Kava Cafe.  It is located just steps away from the High Line at 803 Washington Street at Horatio.  We can always go to Starbucks, so I say, "get local" and check this place out!  Go to www.kavanyc.com to get the whole buzz on this coffee shop.

If you have built up a large appetite while walking the High Line, one of my favorite restaurants, Donatella Pizza,  is located in Chelsea at 184 8th Avenue at 19th.  I love their Arancini which is a fried rice ball with peas and sausage.  And, their Rotolino is served much like a calzone that is stuffed with prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, parmigiano and truffle oil and baked at 700 degrees in their wood burning oven making the Rotolino soft in the middle and crispy on the outside.  It melts in your mouth!   Also, ask for the "secret door" that leads you to the D Bar behind Donatella for an after-dinner drink.  Go to www.donatellanyc.com to take a peek at their wonderful menu!
